New Student Orientation Peer Advisor Job Description for 2017-2018

The Deans' Office is looking for talented and motivated students to become NSO Peer Advisors for the 2017-2018 academic year. NSO Peer Advisors are sophomores, juniors and seniors who work during New Student Orientation to support Wesleyan's faculty advising program and enhance student access to academic resources.


  • Participate in all Peer Advisor meetings/programs during NSO.
  • Know matters related to course registration, WesMaps, faculty advising and Student Academic Resources.
  • Serve as a resource on faculty advising, course selection and academic concerns for students during NSO.
  • Provide outreach and regular communication with assigned students during NSO.
  • Attend Peer Advisor training the week prior to NSO.
  • Complete First Year Matters reading and other materials provided prior to training in August.
  • Support new students with schedule planning and preparation via email during summer pre-registration. Meet with students and help them prepare for faculty advisor meetings during New Student Orientation and provide basic support for other orientation activities, including assisting with Arrival Day move in.

Key qualifications

  • Rising sophomore, junior or senior.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Capacity for discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated record of leadership, maturity and academic excellence.
  • Resourcefulness.
  • Deep knowledge of Wesleyan University including the academic support systems, registration processes and policies, and how to navigate academic departments.
  • Prior experience in a peer advising role such as a Resident Advisor, Peer Career Advisor, Orientation Leader, Teaching Assistant, or Writing Tutor is preferred.
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.2/4.0, remain in good standing, and have a clear judicial history. (Please feel free to contact Dean Backer to discuss the specifics of this qualification.)

Terms and Benefits

  • Period of appointment: One welcome event in April, on campus for training and orientation starting in late August
  • Compensation: Stipend as well as room and board for Summer training and NSO.
